Voice-Loss Survivor Launches Emotion-Infused ‘Voice Glasses’ at TechCrunch Disrupt

When a cancer treatment silenced his vocal cords, Alex Miller didn’t just look for a way to speak again—he set out to give speech its missing emotional depth. At TechCrunch Disrupt’s Startup Battlefield 200, Miller’s company Uhura Bionics unveiled a prototype he calls “voice glasses,” a wearable that fuses artificial‑intelligence voice synthesis with real‑time emotional cues.

The device is built into a stylish pair of frames that house a tiny array of microphones, bone‑conduction speakers, and a custom AI engine. As the wearer talks, the system monitors facial micro‑expressions, eye movement, and ambient sound, then modulates the synthesized voice to reflect excitement, concern, humor, or calm. In practice, a presenter who feels nervous can have the glasses automatically add a confident inflection, while a customer‑service agent can convey empathy without altering the script.

Miller’s personal battle with laryngeal cancer gave him a unique perspective on how flat, robotic speech can feel alienating. He says the goal isn’t to replace natural voice but to restore the emotional bandwidth that many voice‑assistants lack. The technology also has therapeutic potential for people with speech impairments, autism spectrum disorder, or anyone who needs a subtle emotional boost in remote communication.

Judges at the Disrupt competition praised the solution for its blend of hardware elegance and software sophistication, noting that it tackles a social problem as much as a technical one. Uhura Bionics secured a $1.2 million seed round during the event, with investors highlighting the market opportunity in assistive tech, AR/VR, and enterprise communication.

Miller summed up his mission: “Losing my voice taught me that speech is more than words; it’s a feeling. With voice glasses, we’re giving people back the ability to be heard—and felt.” The first batch of devices will enter a limited early‑access program later this year, followed by a broader consumer launch in early 2027.
