Meta Refutes Claims That Muse AI Read Users’ Private Messages Without Consent

Meta has officially responded to a journalist’s claim that its Muse AI assistant read private chats from the Messages app on a Mac even though the relevant permission was turned off. In a detailed statement, the company emphasized that Muse can only access message content when a user explicitly grants permission, and the current architecture does not allow any background or unauthorized retrieval of data.

The journalist reported that while the “Messages” permission was disabled in macOS settings, Muse allegedly displayed excerpts from his personal conversation during a routine query. The allegation reignited concerns about the privacy boundaries of AI assistants, especially as they become more integrated with everyday devices. Meta dismissed the report as a misunderstanding, insisting that without the required consent flag, Muse simply cannot read or process message data.

According to Meta, Muse operates under a strict permission model: the assistant may analyze message content solely to answer a user‑initiated request, and that permission is managed through the operating system’s privacy controls. Users can enable, disable, or revoke access at any time. The company also highlighted that Muse’s design follows a privacy‑by‑design approach, with all data handling logged and subject to independent audits.

Cybersecurity analysts note that the episode underscores the need for clearer communication around AI permission scopes. With regulations such as GDPR and emerging privacy laws tightening the rules for personal data processing, transparency about how and when an assistant can read messages is becoming a critical trust factor.

In response, Meta announced it will release an updated guide on Muse’s privacy settings and open a dedicated support channel for user questions. “User trust is the foundation of our products,” the statement read, adding that Meta will implement additional oversight mechanisms to prevent similar misunderstandings in the future.
