Apple’s latest foldable phone, the iPhone Duo, has already turned heads with its sleek design and dual-screen functionality. Yet the device’s real breakthrough may come from an unexpected source: a small independent developer who has built a “Virtual Walkman” app that turns the Duo into a pocket-sized music player reminiscent of the classic cassette player.
The app leverages the Duo’s unique form factor by using the outer screen as a set of tactile controls while the inner display shows album art and track information. Even when the phone is folded shut, users can tap a slim touch strip on the exterior to play, pause, skip tracks, or adjust volume. This mimics the tactile feel of a traditional Walkman, offering a nostalgic yet modern listening experience.
Within days of its soft launch, the Virtual Walkman went viral on Twitter, TikTok, and Reddit. The hashtag #VirtualWalkman amassed thousands of views as users posted short clips demonstrating how the app lets them control music without unlocking the device. Many highlighted the convenience during commutes, workouts, or while walking the dog – essentially turning the iPhone Duo into a hands‑free audio companion.
The developer, who prefers to remain anonymous, released the app as an open‑source project on GitHub, inviting other programmers to add features such as custom sound effects, playlist integration, and even a retro cassette‑tape animation. Apple has not yet listed the app in the official App Store, but the rapid community uptake suggests that the company may soon consider featuring it as a showcase of what foldable hardware can achieve.
If you own an iPhone Duo and miss the tactile charm of a Walkman, the Virtual Walkman might be the perfect bridge between past and future. Its popularity underscores a growing trend: foldable devices are not just larger screens, they are platforms for innovative, experience‑driven apps that redefine how we interact with everyday technology.
