ChatGPT Desktop Adds ‘Computer History’ to Track Clicks, Keystrokes and Offer Automation

OpenAI has rolled out a new capability called Computer History for its ChatGPT desktop client on macOS. The feature silently records mouse clicks, keyboard inputs, window switches and other routine interactions, stitching them together into a chronological log that the AI can reference when you ask a question or issue a command.

Beyond simple logging, Computer History acts as a personal workflow analyst. By spotting patterns—such as moving files to a particular folder or repeatedly opening a specific set of apps—the system can propose one‑click automations to streamline those actions. If you abandon a task midway, ChatGPT can later remind you of the incomplete step or even suggest the next logical move based on the recorded history.

Privacy is a central focus. OpenAI states that all activity data stays on the local machine and never leaves the device unless you explicitly opt in to share it. Users can toggle the feature on or off globally, or whitelist/blacklist individual applications, giving granular control over what gets recorded.

The ultimate goal is to make the AI behave more like a context‑aware assistant. By remembering what you did earlier in the day, ChatGPT can generate responses that are richer in context—for instance, recalling a data source you referenced in a draft report or suggesting a formula you frequently use in spreadsheets. Computer History aims to cut down on repetitive steps, boost productivity, and feed real‑world usage patterns back into the model’s training loop, all while keeping user data under the user’s own control.
