Binance Restarts Withdrawals After $6.3 Billion Hack

Cryptocurrency exchange Binance announced on November 1, 2026 that it has re‑enabled user withdrawals following a massive security breach that saw $6.3 billion siphoned off. The firm says it has successfully reclaimed roughly 95 percent of the stolen funds, allowing the bulk of its asset pool to be restored to the platform.

The incident first came to light in early October when an unauthorised party gained access to a segment of Binance’s infrastructure, targeting a combination of smart‑contract wallets and cold‑storage accounts. Within hours, the attackers moved large sums across multiple blockchain networks, prompting Binance to freeze all withdrawal requests as a precautionary measure.

In response, the exchange launched a coordinated investigation involving international law‑enforcement agencies, blockchain analytics firms, and leading cybersecurity consultancies. Through meticulous on‑chain tracing, a significant portion of the illicitly transferred tokens was identified and recovered. Binance’s statement read, “We have recovered 95 percent of the total assets affected by the breach; work continues on the remaining 5 percent.”

Security protocols have been overhauled across the board. Multi‑factor authentication (MFA) is now mandatory for all account activities, withdrawal limits were temporarily reduced, and the entire transaction engine has been rebuilt with hardened code. Moreover, Binance increased the share of funds held in offline (cold) wallets to bolster protection against future attacks.

Market participants welcomed the news, noting that the rapid recovery and the resumption of withdrawals signal a strong commitment to restoring confidence. Analysts caution, however, that the unresolved 5 percent loss still poses a risk and that regulators may impose stricter oversight on major exchanges after such a high‑profile event.

Going forward, Binance pledged continued transparency with its users and promised ongoing investment in security infrastructure. The reopening of withdrawals marks the first concrete step toward operational normalcy and aims to reassure traders that the platform is back on stable footing.
