Apple Pay Launches in India After Years of Delay, Major Banks Still Holding Back

After a prolonged wait, Apple has officially rolled out its mobile payment service Apple Pay in India. The launch is being spearheaded by Axis Bank, which is acting as the first Indian partner to process transactions on the platform. According to TechCrunch, the service went live today, allowing iPhone and Apple Watch users to make contact‑less payments at merchants that accept NFC terminals.

India’s digital payments market is already among the world’s largest, ranking fifth in transaction volume as of 2023. By introducing Apple Pay, Apple aims to tap into a youthful, tech‑savvy population that increasingly prefers cash‑less solutions. The service stores encrypted card details on the device, supports tokenized transactions for added security, and lets users pay online using their Apple ID without re‑entering card numbers.

Despite the fanfare, not all of the country’s biggest banks have jumped on board. While Axis Bank has integrated Apple Pay into its infrastructure, several other major institutions have signaled that they will join later, citing the need to align with India’s regulatory framework and to upgrade legacy systems. Industry analysts warn that the delayed participation of these banks could limit Apple Pay’s initial market share and slow adoption among consumers who rely on those banks for their primary accounts.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) maintains strict guidelines for digital payment providers, especially concerning data security and transaction monitoring. Apple has worked closely with local partners to ensure its tokenization and encryption methods meet RBI standards, but the compliance review process can extend rollout timelines for new participants.

Apple Pay’s entry into India aligns with the country’s push to increase contact‑less payment usage ahead of upcoming regulatory deadlines that encourage cashless transactions. If the major banks eventually come on board, the platform could see rapid growth, reshaping the competitive landscape for mobile wallets and potentially prompting other global players to accelerate their own Indian strategies. The coming months will reveal whether Apple Pay can secure a strong foothold in one of the world’s most dynamic payment markets.
