Tesla Announces Cybercab Launch by Year‑End Amid Safety Review

During its third‑quarter earnings call on Wednesday, Tesla revealed that it plans to begin selling the gold‑hued Cybercab to customers before the close of the year. The two‑seat autonomous vehicle, which forgoes a traditional steering wheel, pedals and gear selector, is presented as a flagship of the company’s vision for urban mobility.

Lars Moravy, Tesla’s vice‑president of engineering, explained that the Cybercab runs on a fully electric powertrain capable of delivering roughly 300 miles of range on a single charge. Inside, passengers will find a wide touchscreen interface and an AI‑driven concierge that manages route planning, climate control and entertainment without any driver input. Tesla is positioning the model not only for private owners but also for ride‑hailing fleets and corporate shuttle services.

The announcement comes as federal regulators are conducting a formal investigation into whether the Cybercab meets existing vehicle safety standards. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has opened a review to assess crash‑worthiness, occupant protection and the reliability of the autonomous control system. While Tesla asserts that the car has passed internal safety tests and complies with current regulations, the outcome of the NHTSA review remains uncertain.

Industry analysts view the year‑end launch as a strategic move to diversify Tesla’s revenue streams and capture a new segment of the mobility market. They caution, however, that any delays stemming from the safety investigation could affect consumer confidence and the company’s rollout timeline. Tesla has pledged full transparency throughout the regulatory process and indicated that a positive ruling would accelerate the Cybercab’s entry into global markets.

If the Cybercab clears the regulatory hurdle, it could become one of the first mass‑produced, steering‑wheel‑free vehicles, signaling a significant shift in how cities think about personal and shared transportation.
