Spotify is scaling up its AI‑driven remix and cover offering by bringing two major partners on board: Merlin, the collective that represents more than 30,000 independent labels and distributors, and Universal Music Group (UMG). The new paid feature will allow listeners to generate AI‑crafted versions of tracks from participating artists, turning fan creativity into a revenue‑generating channel.
Key to the rollout is an opt‑in system that gives artists full control over whether their catalog can be used. Musicians who agree to participate will see their names credited on every AI‑generated rendition, and they will receive a share of the royalties earned from streams or downloads of those versions. Spotify says the model is designed to protect creators while still delivering innovative listening experiences.
Merlin’s involvement marks a significant shift for the independent music sector, which has historically been left out of large‑scale AI experiments dominated by major labels. By opening the platform to indie catalogs, Spotify is creating a new income stream for smaller artists and expanding the pool of music that fans can remix.
The service is slated to enter a beta phase later this fall, with a subscription fee granting users access to the tool. Spotify emphasizes that the initiative is a test case for how artificial intelligence can be integrated responsibly into the music ecosystem, ensuring that copyright owners are recognized and compensated.
Industry observers are watching closely to see how this blend of technology and royalty management will influence the future of music creation, distribution, and the relationship between creators and their audiences.
