Elon Musk Ups the Ante on SpaceX’s First Earnings Call, Outpacing His Executives

SpaceX held its first quarterly earnings call in August 2026, with CFO Bret Johnsen and President Gwynne Shotwell laying out the company’s financial outlook. Johnsen projected revenue of $15 billion by the end of 2025 and highlighted Starlink’s ambition to reach 30 million subscribers by 2027. Shotwell focused on the operational ramp‑up of Starship, the roadmap for crewed missions to Mars, and the development of lunar refueling stations.

Midway through the presentation, Elon Musk interjected, effectively one‑upping the numbers his senior team had just shared. He announced that Starship would achieve a full commercial launch cadence by the end of 2026, with a target of 100 flights per year beginning in 2027. Musk also claimed that Starlink would evolve from a broadband service into a global low‑latency data mesh, providing seamless connectivity across all continents.

Turning to the Mars colonisation effort, Musk revealed a new milestone: a sustainable surface habitat to be established by 2030, with a budget twice the size of the original plan to accelerate development. He added that a lunar fuel depot would be operational by 2028, opening the door for commercial payloads to refuel in orbit and dramatically reduce mission costs.

Analysts responded with cautious optimism. While Musk’s escalated targets undeniably excite investors, they also raise questions about financing and execution risk. SpaceX already operates with a high‑cost structure, and the added projects could demand fresh capital injections. Nevertheless, the company’s track record of exceeding its own forecasts suggests that at least part of Musk’s vision could materialise.

In summary, Elon Musk used SpaceX’s inaugural earnings call to push beyond the ambitious promises made by his CFO and President, delivering an even more daring roadmap for the next decade. The move is likely to boost internal morale while re‑capturing the attention of the broader investment community.
