U.S.-based logistics pioneer Zipline announced a fresh $1.5 billion capital raise that pushed its enterprise value to $21.5 billion. The influx of funds comes as demand for its autonomous aerial delivery service continues to surge across multiple industries.
Founded in 2014 to transport medical supplies to remote clinics, Zipline has since broadened its portfolio to include consumer goods, groceries, and e‑commerce parcels. Its fleet of fixed‑wing drones can fly at high altitude, drop packages with pinpoint accuracy, and complete a typical delivery in under ten minutes – a compelling proposition for congested urban centers and hard‑to‑reach locations.
Walmart entered a pilot program with Zipline last year, testing drone deliveries in a handful of U.S. cities. The retailer now plans to scale the collaboration, adding new product categories and extending coverage to additional markets. Walmart executives highlighted the environmental benefits of electric drones and the speed advantage they bring to same‑day fulfillment.
The newly raised capital will enable Zipline to expand its drone inventory, invest in AI‑driven route optimization, improve battery performance, and reinforce safety protocols. Industry analysts predict that the injection of cash will accelerate the overall growth of the drone logistics sector, challenging conventional ground‑based delivery models.
“Deepening our partnership with a retail giant like Walmart is a pivotal step toward making drone deliveries a routine part of everyday life,” said Zipline’s CEO. Looking ahead, the company aims to enter European and Asian markets, positioning itself as a cornerstone of a global, low‑carbon, on‑demand delivery network.
