NYC Official Mamdani Slams Madison Square Garden Owner James Dolan Over Surveillance Tech

Adam Mamdani, head of New York City’s oversight office, has publicly rebuked James Dolan, the owner of Madison Square Garden (MSG), for deploying intrusive surveillance technology at the venue. Mamdani’s remarks came in the wake of a massive data breach disclosed last year, which revealed that Dolan’s security team was collecting facial‑recognition scans, location data, and other personal details from thousands of concert‑goers and sports fans.

The breach showed that the collected information was stored in a private database without any explicit consent from attendees. According to city investigators, the data was used to flag potential security threats before they materialized, but the lack of transparency and the sheer scale of the operation raised serious privacy concerns.

Mamdani stated, “Even on private property, citizens retain a right to privacy. MSG’s surveillance system constitutes a gross violation of that right by harvesting and retaining personal data without proper notice or opt‑out options.” He added that New York City is drafting new regulations to ensure that large‑scale venues disclose data‑collection practices and undergo regular audits.

In response, Dolan defended the technology as a necessary modern security measure, emphasizing that the information is solely used to prevent incidents and protect patrons. He announced plans to strengthen MSG’s security protocols and to release regular transparency reports detailing what data is collected, how it is stored, and who has access to it.

The controversy has sparked a broader call for oversight of surveillance tools used by other major venues across the city. Privacy experts argue that a balanced approach—one that safeguards public safety while respecting individual privacy—is essential. New York’s administration says it will introduce a comprehensive surveillance legislation package within the next few months, aiming to set clear limits on data collection, retention, and sharing for all large event spaces.
