Orkut’s Founder Plans a Comeback, Targeting Algorithms and AI‑Generated Content

When Orkut launched in 2004 it quickly became a global phenomenon, only to be shut down a decade later in 2014. Yet the memory of its community‑first spirit lives on, especially among users who still talk about “the good old Orkut days.” Now the man behind that legacy, Orkut Büyükkökten, has announced an ambitious plan to bring the platform back – but with a twist that directly challenges the algorithm‑driven, AI‑filled feeds dominating today’s social media.

Speaking at a virtual town‑hall, Büyükkökten said the new service will not be a nostalgic replica; it will be a reaction to what he calls “the erosion of authentic conversation caused by opaque algorithms and synthetic content.” He outlined four core principles that will shape the revived network:

* **Chronological Timeline:** Posts appear in pure time order, with no hidden ranking or ad‑based boosting.
* **AI‑Content Guardrails:** Machine‑generated text, images and videos are automatically flagged. Users can choose to hide or completely disable AI‑produced material in their feed.
* **Human‑Centred Moderation:** Instead of relying solely on automated filters, a team of human moderators will enforce community standards, backed by transparent reporting tools.
* **Open API & Data Portability:** Members retain full ownership of their data, can export it at any time, and can connect third‑party apps through a publicly documented API.

The roadmap aims for a beta launch in Q1 2027, with a limited invite‑only rollout to former Orkut community leaders who have already expressed interest. Büyükkökten revealed that a stealth seed round has secured $5 million, enough to build the core infrastructure and hire a dedicated moderation staff.

In a landscape where most platforms push personalized, algorithmic timelines and increasingly rely on AI‑generated content to keep users scrolling, this revival positions itself as a counter‑movement. By championing chronological feeds, human oversight, and user‑controlled data, the new Orkut hopes to rekindle the sense of genuine connection that made the original so beloved. The tech world is watching closely, curious whether a 2000s‑era social network can thrive in a 2020s dominated by algorithms.
