Google has launched a pilot program in India that lets shoppers buy items on Walmart‑owned Flipkart through its Gemini AI assistant and the new AI Mode interface. The trial is currently restricted to a handful of product categories and a select group of users, allowing the company to gauge the performance and safety of AI‑driven commerce before a wider launch.
During the test, users can type natural‑language requests into Gemini, asking for product details, price comparisons, and delivery estimates. The assistant instantly retrieves the relevant data and, when the user confirms, AI Mode automatically adds the chosen items to the cart and completes the checkout with a single command. This streamlined flow aims to cut down the time spent navigating multiple pages and to personalize recommendations based on each shopper’s preferences.
Google says the experiment will also evaluate how well the system handles payment security and data privacy. Strict safeguards are in place to protect user information, and the company is conducting continuous audits of the transaction pipeline.
The limited rollout is slated to expand in late October, at which point a broader assortment of goods and additional regional user groups will be invited to participate. Google expects the larger rollout to provide deeper insights into scaling AI‑assisted shopping across a massive e‑commerce platform.
If successful, the Gemini and AI Mode integration could reshape the way Indian consumers interact with online marketplaces, offering a more conversational and frictionless buying experience. The initiative underscores how major tech firms are adapting their AI capabilities to local market dynamics, potentially accelerating the evolution of digital retail in one of the world’s fastest‑growing economies.
