Comcast Adds Motion‑Sensing to Its Latest Routers, Raising Privacy Questions

Comcast has rolled out a software update that turns its newest generation routers into motion‑detecting devices. Instead of relying on traditional PIR sensors, the routers monitor subtle fluctuations in Wi‑Fi signal strength and phase to infer whether a person is moving inside a room. The capability is aimed at smart‑home integrations, allowing lights, security cameras, and energy‑saving routines to be triggered directly from the network hardware.

The technology works by analyzing how radio waves bounce off objects and bodies; even slight movements cause measurable changes that the router’s firmware can interpret as motion events. According to Comcast, the data collected is limited to binary presence information and is stripped of any personally identifying details before it leaves the device. Nevertheless, the fact that these readings are sent to cloud servers for processing has sparked a debate about user privacy.

Comcast states that the motion‑sensing feature is disabled by default and can only be activated after the subscriber explicitly opts in through the router’s admin interface. Privacy advocates, however, warn that the ability of a single piece of hardware to continuously monitor an entire home could be misused if data‑handling policies are not fully transparent. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is expected to scrutinize such capabilities under its upcoming wireless standards.

Customers will be able to turn motion detection on or off, limit data sharing, and delete historical motion logs from the router’s dashboard. Comcast argues that these controls balance innovative smart‑home functionality with the need to protect user privacy. Still, homeowners are encouraged to review the router’s privacy settings and understand how motion data is stored and processed before embracing the new feature.
