A team of security researchers recently performed a large‑scale scan of Poland’s public‑sector websites and discovered that courts, hospitals and airports are alarmingly vulnerable to cyber attacks. The investigation focused on the software stacks that power these sites – primarily content management systems (CMS) and web‑display frameworks – and found that many institutions are still running outdated versions with known security flaws.
Using automated scanners, the analysts examined thousands of domain headers, SSL configurations and JavaScript libraries across the Polish web. The data showed a significant number of official sites still rely on legacy releases of Joomla, WordPress and Drupal. In addition, weak password policies and missing web‑application firewalls left many portals open to brute‑force attempts and injection attacks.
The implications are serious. In court portals, attackers could alter or forge legal documents; in hospital information systems, they could access patient records or disrupt critical services; and at airport websites, they could manipulate flight information or harvest traveler data. Researchers warned that these weaknesses could be exploited to launch defacement campaigns, data theft operations or denial‑of‑service attacks that would affect thousands of citizens.
Experts recommend an immediate patching cycle, the deployment of security updates, and the adoption of multi‑factor authentication for all privileged accounts. They also advise regular penetration testing and the implementation of a robust web‑application firewall to filter malicious traffic.
Polish authorities have acknowledged the report and said they will work closely with the research team to prioritize remediation. The episode underscores how essential it is for public institutions to treat digital security as a core component of their service delivery, protecting both the integrity of public information and the privacy of the people they serve.
